Top family friendly employers named

Despite an unprecedented year in the workplace Working Families has drawn up a list of the top family friendly employers

Dads

Here’s the nation’s most family friendly employers. The Working Families campaign group published the results of its annual review of family friendly firms this week.

There’s a top 10 of the most impressive organisations to work for. And a longer list running to 30 employers. Public sector organisations and financial institutions dominate both lists.

Employers were assessed using Working Families’ Benchmark and were scored on four key areas to build a comprehensive picture of their flexible and family-friendly policies and practices that specifically support mothers, fathers, and carers. These are:

  • Integration to organisational strategy and culture – which looks at culture, attitude and how far flexible and family-friendly working practices have become embedded.
  • Policy – which looks at the creation, development and deployment of flexible and family-friendly working policies.
  • Consistent practice – which considers how well flexible and family-friendly working is supported.
  • Evidence and statistics – which looks at the effects of flexible and family-friendly working on the organisation, and their ability to understand those effects.

Top 10

Rather than ranking the organisations Working Families announced a Top 10 list in alphabetical order. They are:

  • American Express
  • Crown Prosecution Service
  • DWF
  • Experian
  • Imperial College London
  • Independent Living Fund Scotland
  • Intellectual Property Office
  • Lloyds Banking Group
  • Pinsent Masons
  • Welsh Parliament

Pandemic

Thirty employers made the long list. Remarkably they include Public Health England who have had surely their busiest year ever yet still managed to adhere to family friendly working. Last month the government announced that Public Health England will be wound down.

Jane van Zyl, chief executive of Working Families, said the pandemic had brought to light the importance of family-friendly employers. She said, “Covid-19 has demonstrated just how vital it is for employers to support the diverse needs of their staff team and build cultures that embrace flexible working. These employers excelled in our rigorous benchmarking process, proving they are leading the way in building family-friendly workplaces in the UK.”
