Our business is made up of bold, creative people. And most of them are mums and dads. So we recognize the challenges balancing career and home life can bring. Whatever stage you are in your career and family, we have support structures and training to help you develop what you need to succeed.

Working at Atkins

Our offices welcome people from contrasting backgrounds and perspectives. With different ages, religions, cultures, languages, genders, sexual orientations and more, comes a wider repertoire of ideas and experiences. Our commitment to a diverse and inclusive work style is what gives us the competitive edge and keeps us ahead of innovation.

Ways we support parents

We believe that everyone who works for us deserves to enjoy their work and home lives to the max. Our industry-leading options in the UK & Europe include term time, home and mobile working, part time and job share, career breaks, and our buy-more-leave holiday scheme.

We’re proud to say that flexible working has become a highly regarded part of our team culture. It’s no longer seen as a practice ‘just for mums’. Since 2012 we’ve seen a 74% increase in our male part time population. And almost half of our workforce is now purchasing additional days off a year.

A staff-generated intranet forum for men and women with children of all ages. It’s become a much-loved support network, where parents can get suggestions from people who really understand the work environment and practicalities of solutions.

We’ve also signed the Equalities and Human Rights Commission’s Working Forward pledge, demonstrating our commitment to working parents. It’s backed up by a measurable action plan to ensure that we’re continuously improving our approach.

Career progression

At Atkins we’re passionate about enabling parents to develop and build their careers – whatever their working pattern. These are some of our UK & Europe policies and practices to help mums and dads get back on track and progress their careers:

A practical course aimed at mums and dads who are preparing to return or have recently returned to work after parental leave. It’s designed to help balance a demanding career and happy home life. Parents are free to work through the self-study and expert telephone coaching sessions in a way and at times that suit them. Our ParentNet group backs up the support throughout, providing ongoing virtual and a location-dependent face-to-face network.

Our vision for women

Our overall goal is to see more women in senior roles, across design, engineering and project management. We are making our organization a better place to work, so that everyone can excel professionally and personally. We’re also investing in our female employees at all career stages. As a result Atkins is attracting and retaining more women, and more female employees are being promoted. Here are two of our UK-wide initiatives:

These friendly and informal forums encourage a gender-balanced and inclusive workplace. WPN meetings are held across our offices and have featured presentations on key issues around diversity and inclusion, as well as relevant book reviews and world café events. These networks are also a great space for sharing tips and guidance on working at the business, from working with clients to internal and external networking.

Our elective three-month programme supports women both within the business and throughout our sector. Female employees who have taken part have experienced real and lasting career changes.

 SNC-Lavalin around the world

We have over 50,000 employees working in over 50 countries worldwide. In recognition of this, our family-friendly policies and practices reflect the diversity of our locations.
