Blogger Drake Peabody on why we need to review our lives every now and again as we learn to adapt to new circumstances.
Let’s go on a journey together as we explore the importance of the evolving conversation.
To start today’s journey, take a moment to reflect and jot down a few bullets on where you were five years ago – where did you live, what was your job, what was your relationship/family situation, how was your health, your goals and ambitions, any caring responsibilities, did you have pets, etc.
Now do the same thing for where you are now and where you were 10 years ago.
Having done this personally, it becomes clear how much has changed in my life during the last 10 years. For example, today I have embarked on becoming a British citizen, have a child, am a trustee with two charities, have a larger role in my professional life and made it through COVID. Five years ago, my wife (Kara) and I recently moved to London, had no kids and had never heard of COVID. Winding back 10 years, my wife and I were still dating, living in Miami, working at different companies, and had never lived outside of the US.
As life events evolve and change, I have found it important to continue to evolve the conversation at home and professionally. Through continuing to have conversations on what works for us over time has helped us adapt to living in different places across the world, having a child, changing careers, navigating the COVID years as new parents, etc. The recipe for success for Kara and me 10 years ago was very different to what it is today and will continue to evolve over the next five – 10 years ahead.
As we wrap up today’s journey together, I encourage you to reflect on how things have changed for you over the last 10 years, embrace the change that will continue in the years to come, and have evolving conversations at home and professionally as things change for you.
