Marco: From a career to the father role and back

After working for over ten years as a stay-at-home dad, Marco is now a UBS Business Analyst.

In 2003, after more than 15 years in the life insurance industry working in international positions in Luxembourg and Switzerland, I made the decision to give up my career and take care of my two children and the household. This gave my wife the opportunity to pursue a management career, which, when looking back now, has paid off for everyone involved.

With the children in their mid-teens, and with their development into independent young adults progressing smoothly, I made the decision to return to the working world in early 2014. After looking for a job for over six months, I finally landed an interview with UBS for a position that was advertised as either 100% or as a job share. After a few interview rounds, I was informed that I was being considered with another 50% candidate against a candidate who would take the job with a 100% workload. Looking back, I think my line manager’s decision to hire two part-time employees instead of one full-time employee was a very courageous and potentially risky one that paid off in the long run. The split role functioned very well and soon developed into more opportunities for both of us. We are now both hired at 80% and 70% respectively.

It was hard getting the door opener for an interview and it required patience, but with my line manager’s flexibility, we created a win-win situation for all. It was also hard getting back into the latest developments in the life insurance & banking industry, as lots had changed since I left the industry in 2003. However, after about six months of gaining all the knowledge back, I felt comfortable again in my role within the bank and now feel that I am able to contribute in a positive and informed manner in my daily work.

I recently read that I am one of only 2% of men in Switzerland who decide to give up their career and take over the role of a “house husband.” It was an extremely enriching time, but I am also happy that UBS gave me the opportunity to return to a career path. I would highly recommend it to any young fathers who have the opportunity to do so.

I left my career leading a team of 15 people in the life insurance consulting business in 2003 and returned in 2014 as an operations product specialist. Now I am a business analyst in UBS’s Life Insurance team in Wiedikon/Zurich in Switzerland. I spent over ten years as a stay-at-home dad, and would never give this experience up for anything.
