Greater Anglia (GA) is a train operating company that provides intercity, commuter and rural train services throughout the East of England, including the Stansted Express.
We form part of a wider transport group called Abellio Transport Holdings, which is owned by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS – in English: Dutch Railways) in the Netherlands, and also runs Merseyrail, West Midlands, East Midlands and Bus services in London and Surrey.
Our aim is to provide reliable, clean trains and stations with friendly and helpful colleagues. We are responsible for the provision, maintenance and upkeep of all trains travelling on our route and work closely with Network Rail, who own and maintain the infrastructure to provide the best possible journey experience for our customers. In 2018, Greater Anglia made a £1.4 billion investment in brand new trains, completing replacing our current fleet. The new trains have much more space, run faster and are much more environmentally friendly. Greater Anglia may appear to be only about trains but there are many varied roles in our business and back-office colleagues are just as important to running the railway as frontline.
Our values define our culture and how we treat one another and our customers. By bringing these values to life we can attract and welcome the right people into our business and create a culture within which we all want to work.
Each one of us has a role to play in delivering our objectives, driving performance, and adding to business value. We reflect our company values and service behaviours in the way we engage with our customers and each other through adopting a friendly, respectful, and responsible approach to everything we do. This ensures we deliver our mission statement to meet and exceed our customer expectations.
GA increases the value of its colleagues through investing time and money into training, coaching, and developing each of us. The training and development of our colleagues is critical to achieving our vision, our behaviours, and goals.
We are committed to Diversity and Inclusion in rail and future proofing our business by making everyone feel they belong; we’ve made some great steps towards an inclusive culture at Greater Anglia and will continue to build on those steps. For example, we had a complete revamp of our uniform policy in 2019 when we launched our new uniform. The project was titled ‘bring your best self to work’, as we embraced the difference of our colleagues and relaxed our rules around hair colour, piercings, and tattoos.
We recognise the importance of family life and the need for our colleagues to have the ability to balance their work and family. That’s why we offer paternity and parental leave – all part of our commitment to family friendly policies.
Learning and development is key to our business. Our philosophy is there is always room to continue to learn and grow. Across the company there is an enormous range of learning opportunities on offer to help you be the best that you can be and support you in continuing to develop. We encourage regular career conversations through check ins with your line manager. We have a wide range of internal development programmes that have been designed to help build new and develop existing colleagues’ skillsets. We offer formal, online, and informal learning to cater to everyone’s needs.
We have been awarded with Train Operator of the Year 2021 at the Rail Business Awards for the second year in a row. We hold the accolade for the most reliable trains in Britain by winning a ‘golden spanner’ award at the rail industry’s “Oscars” which recognises the best rail services in the country.
