Chief Strategy Office:

The Chief Strategy Office is a newly formed division under a new Chief Strategy Officer.  Accountable for developing the group wide strategy including growth opportunities such as M&A, new technologies or strategic direction.  This critical function is focused on setting the direction for Inmarsat globally and will work in close partnership with all functions and regions.

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The Senior Strategy & Business Development Manager is a key member of the Chief Strategy Office who will support and/or lead a number of corporate strategy and business development initiatives and work on various initiatives including strategy planning and strategic projects, market and competitor assessments, strategic business case development, and more.

The scope of the role includes a wide range of activities and responsibilities such as the development of corporate strategy materials and contribution to strategic plans, market research and strategic assessments, stakeholder management, facilitation of strategy workshops, internal and external presentations, support and lead on modelling and business cases, internal and external due diligence, contribution to internal and external communications around the strategy and strategic issues of the company, support to a number of Corporate Business Development (BD) initiatives, as well as reporting including regular strategy, plan execution, market and competitor updates to the CSO, the Senior Leadership Team, Exec and Board.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the corporate strategic planning and strategy definition process of the company
  • Conduct strategic assessments and be a key contributor to large strategic business cases
  • Contribute to large strategic corporate projects/initiatives at Inmarsat that are led and/or supported by the CSO team
  • Diligently assess and constructively challenge internal strategy plans and business cases and make constructive recommendations for improvements and adjustments
  • Engage with strategy and business development stakeholders across the company and build strong working relationship and communication channels
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement with business units (BUs) and central functions, and alignment on strategic plans and questions through organising
  • Organise, facilitate and lead on internal strategy meetings and workshops
  • Drive strategy execution by assessing and tracking progress of strategic objectives and KPIs, flagging issues and contributing risk mitigation actions, necessary adjustments, etc.
  • Contribute to the constant improvement (and/or creating) of necessary strategy processes of the company 
  • Conduct research on market trends, market sizes, competitive landscape, etc. to support CSO activities
  • Help ensure that the CSO team and other key stakeholders are kept up to date on strategically relevant topics, trends, and data through pro-active data/information gathering and dissemination
  • Research, maintain and improve a live database of strategically relevant information (KPIs) on Inmarsat itself as well as our external market and competitor environment
  • Development of strategy papers, corporate strategy materials, presentations, templates, for SLT, internal review boards and SteerCos, and Exec meetings
  • Financial modelling and analysis in support of strategic projects, business cases, etc.
  • Support to Business Development initiatives and engagement with external parties
  • Work with the rest of the strategy team to support on any other activities of the CSO team
  •  Participate in industry conferences if and when relevant

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strategic thinking and mindset
  • Strong analytical skills: ability to quickly analyse and absorb large amounts of complex information to draw conclusions
  • Proven ability to assess business plans, market forecasts, company reports, and to extract and condense the relevant information
  • Ability to efficiently gather relevant information via desk research, interviews, etc.
  • Financial/management accounting skills with ability to understand and interpret financial statements and financial KPIs
  • Exceptional creative, structured thinking and experience applying a broad range of strategic and business analysis frameworks as well as good communication skills
  • Experience in the development of strategic and financial plans
  • Fast learner who can work autonomously and act as a strong team player
  • Organised, structured, rigorous work methodology 
  • Ability to work under pressure and to short deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong and efficient Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Strong commitment to work and a high quality of deliverables
  • Good team player

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Top tier strategy consulting or investment banking background, ideally combined with proven corporate strategy experience in a corporate
  • Experience in the telecom sector, ideally (but not necessarily) satellite communications
  • Solid academic background with strategy/business/finance and/or technical higher education degree
