Job Description

***This is a 12 month FTC***

Primary role purpose:

Inmarsat will be responsible for the management and operation of existing geostationary secure communications satellites owned by the UK government. The Spacecraft Operations Automation Engineer will be part of a team responsible for the implementation and delivery of a plan to replicate Inmarsat’s concept of operations and bring fully autonomous operations to this newly acquired satellite fleet.

The role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to participate in a successful transition from a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to a new operating model and influence and shape UK government/military satellite operations into the next decade.

This full-time, temporary role is based in Wiltshire but will involve an initial 3 month training programme based at, and occasional subsequent travel to, Inmarsat’s London Headquarters. The candidate must be a UK national and be able to achieve ‘Security Check’ (SC) security clearance.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete a rigorous 3 month in-house spacecraft operations training programme
  • Take ownership of a spacecraft operations automation project plan and schedule
  • Perform change specification, change implementation, simulation and functional validation, on-site staff training and operational roll-out of all aspects of a spacecraft operations automation programme, including procedures, processes and infrastructure
  • Develop strong working relationships with the Satellite OEM and their Customers
  • Review and update the incumbent operator’s policies and procedures
  • Support and participate in a progressive service assurance process, including preparation for assurance milestones and operational readiness demonstrations
  • Develop supporting technical documentation for key design reviews (PDR, CDR, FDR etc.)
  • To be responsible for health, safety and security of the project team in accordance with Inmarsat policies
  • To be aware of and comply with Company Standards of Conduct and all relevant statutory requirements
  • To carry out any other reasonable management request

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Significant experience working in a systems / automation engineering role within SATCOM / space
  • Must be degree educated in engineering discipline (software, systems, computer science, or similar)
  • Familiarity with geostationary spacecraft operations including automation concepts, operating procedures and satellite simulators
  • Familiarity with geostationary spacecraft subsystems
  • Familiarity with project management, change control and service assurance processes
  • University degree in electrical/mechanical/aerospace engineering, computer science or equivalent qualification
  • Systems engineering and design experience including understanding of V-Model and gated review process
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the business both internally and externally with Customers
  • Excellent analytical skills resulting in clear and concise explanations of observations, problems or anomalies
  • Collaborative mind-set and strong interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Must be able to achieve SC clearance
  • Must be a UK national

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with the I4S satellite control system
  • Familiarity with the JAS scripting language
  • Familiarity with Airbus E3000 spacecraft operating concepts and procedures
  • Familiarity with spacecraft ground control systems integration and testing
  • Experience in using requirements management tools such as DOORS, Cradle etc.
