Job Description

Primary role purpose:

Inmarsat is evolving the team’s role and focus to further develop our strategic procurement and customer capabilities; identifying and implementing cost control opportunities across the business and utilising technologies to maximise the effectiveness of the team. A key part of the Procurement function is Commercial Contracts, who are responsible for customer facing contracts.

Commercial Contracts work with the business units to prioritise, draft, negotiate and execute sales contracts with our customers that deliver hundreds of millions of dollars of sales per year. This is a fundamental part of the business where efficient and lean contracting can make the difference on Inmarsat’s financial results. Having a good understanding of the business units, commercial awareness, understanding key drivers of the business and developing close relationships is critical to the success of this role.

This particular role, managing the contract on a high-profile and high value Ministry of Defence programme, which supports the nations forces for air, sea and land connectivity worldwide.

To own the entire contract management (customer and supplier) of a particular programme, where Inmarsat is a tier 1 into the Ministry of Defence through a major prime.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the commercial and procurement lead for a Ministry of Defence (MOD) programme, resourcing direct reports to focus on priorities
  • Develop a clear procurement and contract management strategy, approach, priorities and implement these in a timely fashion with business leaders to drive maximum benefit and effect
  • Develop a contract management framework including risk assessments and use those to manage the MOD contract including appropriate reporting and conducting presentations as needed
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders; the customer, any suppliers and internal
  • Run best value for money procurements on behalf of the MOD in according with appropriate procurement policies, processes and regulations
  • Create pricing for changes, as requested by the Tier 1 using agreed rates and submit such pricing changes to the Tier 1 for change management
  • Competently provide commercial and legal advice to the business based upon risk assessment and the contractual terms and including managing contractual changes
  • Work closely alongside the programme manager to ensure maximum profitability for the business.
  • Review through any potential liabilities to reduce, mitigate or transfer to another party
  • Resolve disputes with the customer and suppliers in a timely fashion to ensure there are no material issues nor claims which need to be escalated
  • Support the Director of Commercial Contracts in, as well as contributing new ideas to the implementation of the new operating model for the team which is based on process excellence; pace; empowerment and excellent communication
  • Any other reasonable management request

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • English contract law
  • Must be able to achieve SC clearance
  • Must be a UK national
  • Commercial awareness and appreciation of how to negotiate a profitable deal
  • Strong relationship building and influencing skills
  • Experienced contract drafter with strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent articulation and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Team player

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Educated to degree level (law degree or post grad qualification)
  • Experience working in a complex global or multisite listed company
  • Ability to co-ordinate cross functional teams to an agreed outcome
  • Worked in a similar role
