Chief Operations Office 

Inmarsat’s Chief Operations Office (COO) plays a vital role managing the services that keep our business running and delivering to our customers. COO consists of 9 functions including: Satellite Operations, Network Operations, Service Assurance, Service Delivery Aviation and Customer Assurance, Service Delivery and Supply Chain, Project Management Office, Global Cyber Security and Group IT

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

This role is a mixture of leadership and hands-on of the development of network traffic-shaping, including advanced data analysis, monitoring and reporting, traffic management algorithms, deep-packet inspection. This is a new position created to expand the capability of traffic management within a telecoms environment. The position will work within in a team of 6 staff that provide analytics into our service performance function. 

The role is expected to lead the development of new concepts from initiation into operational support. The role shall provide direction in the selection of technologies for advanced data analytics, and is expected to develop analytics that can model traffic behaviour, such as machine learning.

The role is expected to determine algorithms that will optimise the network capacity while ensuring that service performance is retained. The role will be expected to monitor Inmarsat satellite networks for efficiency of bandwidth, report on service quality, develop and rollout solutions for managing traffic, and identify potential service improvements.

This position would be suitable for someone who has built up engineering know-how within the telecoms industry and would like to expand their knowledge of how to use data technologies to create analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Determine technology solutions in advanced data analysis required for future service performance optimisation. Provide leadership and direction in the development of the infrastructure of data processing and report visualisation
  • Provide direction to colleagues on how to analyse, monitor, report on traffic-shaping
  • Lead the rollout of new algorithms that monitor traffic and provide appropriate optimisations in traffic management. Lead the development of data analytics for traffic management
  • Create the capability where satcom networks are continuously assessed for the optimisation of network capacity, according to customer applications and demand
  • Generate insights and business solutions around the network optimisation of the Inmarsat service offering and trigger opportunities that generate revenue
  • Use data analysis to determine trends in traffic behaviour and determine network optimisation. Data analysis may extend to machine learning

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Have hands-on experience of Deep Packet Inspection technology and how can be applied to manage applications in a network to achieve service quality
  • Have achieved a responsible position within the telecoms industry, or similar, and can demonstrate successful delivery of key engineering projects within an operational environment
  • Hands-on experience of optimisation of networks for performance of applications as seen by end-customers and according to business needs
  • Capability to build impactful business assessments, using analysis and visualisation, and create convincing arguments for the assessed solution
  • Ability to comprehend complex contexts and to communicate ideas in a simple business language to stakeholders from CxOs to junior analysts
  • Presence and charisma to convince an audience of the route to success and the ability to build strong and powerful relationships
  • An aptitude for strategic development and implementation
  • Demonstrable track record of integrity and commercial acumen

 Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of databases and proven experience of working with and creating enterprise data models and data architectures. Experience with Google Cloud Platform, Big Query, visualisation tools
  • Knowledge of data analysis technology, big data, data engineering, machine learning
  • Experience of Sandvine Deep Packet Inspection technology for network optimisation
  • Knowledge of network technologies
  • Knowledge of satellite communications
