General Dental Council

Lay Council Member

Remuneration: £15,000 per annum for a time commitment of a minimum of 35 days

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of around 114,000 dental professionals, including over 43,000 dentists and over 70,000 dental care professionals. The GDC’s primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this it registers qualified professionals, sets and enforces standards of dental practice, investigates fitness to practise complaints, and ensures the quality of dental education.

The environment in which the GDC operates is complex. As a UK-wide regulator the GDC works across the separate healthcare systems of each of the four nations, all with different challenges and priorities. It works in an environment where both NHS and private provision is important, and where access to dental services has been significantly affected due to COVID-19. It operates within a legislative framework that it is actively working with Government to modernise.

The GDC understands the diverse nature of the dental workforce and the society they serve, and therefore particularly welcomes applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, from all walks of life.

Applicants for the position of Lay Council Member* must be able to contribute to setting strategy, exercise oversight and ensure effective corporate governance, and will have a demonstrable commitment to supporting confidence in public services and patient safety. A seasoned senior leader, you will bring recent non-executive experience, gained ideally within a regulator or regulated sector, together with a strong commercial background and the ability to understand organisational finances, policies and processes and performance management at a strategic level.

The time commitment for the role will be a minimum of 35 days per annum with remuneration of £15,000, plus expenses (in line with policy). The successful candidate is expected to take up the role from Spring 2022.

* A lay member is a person who is not, and has never been, registered with the GDC or who has never held a qualification that makes them eligible for registration with the GDC.

The GDC is committed to promoting equality of opportunity and values diversity of culture among our Council members.  We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from all suitably qualified individuals.  We will seek to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly, with respect and without bias.  The GDC are part of the Disability Confident scheme and as such are committed to accepting applications from candidates through the scheme.
