Commercial and Product Management

Inmarsat’s Commercial & Product Management (CPM) group is accountable for ensuring the voice of the customer is heard and used in all aspects of defining our offer. Coupling customer insight with market intelligence, this informs our product strategy, our channel strategy and our commercial offer. In addition, it helps us support the business to win, grow and retain customers as well as allowing us to be clearer on how we will partner with other players who can create value, and why partnering and working with Inmarsat is valuable to them. CPM also focuses on how to develop, deliver and maintain the right products and services to be competitive, ensuring our costs to serve are optimised and reducing complexity.

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

  • You will provide a market focused strategy and deliver profitable growth for your products
  • You will own the product roadmaps and lead matrix development teams with a strong focus on customers’ commercial requirements in the context of the overall market
  • You will bring clarity to the engineering development teams by providing them with a clear vision of what the product is required to do and in what timescale
  • You will work closely with market focused sales and business development groups as well as gathering the Voice of the Customer from partners/customers to understand customers’ future plans and create requirements for their products

Key Accountabilities:

Product Management

  • Responsible for the P&L for the products within his/her ownership
  • Support development of Product Business plan for the products within their purview
  • Ensure that product releases arrive on time and manages the process with replicable efficiency and KPI definitions for project tracking   
  • In collaboration with the Senior Product Manager, manage and drive the product lifecycle, roadmap, commercial requirements, positioning, pricing and performance

Product Roadmaps:

  • Provide development teams with the customers’ vision and requirements – aligned to the defined commercial frameworks
  • Management of value propositions and business plans consulting with the commercial group and the Business Unit  
  • Construction and refinement of yearly roadmaps, high level business objectives in response to the market & customer requirements and in the context of the competitive landscape
  • Create and describe the go-to-market channels, partners and support the Business Units who will implement the go-to-market plans
  • Creation of product documentation related to functionality, features, market introduction, positioning, differentiation and value proposition

Requirements Management:

  • Create the Marketing Requirements Document to articulate the end to end functionality a specific product must deliver.  The Product Manager will give these commercial requirements and lead this team with a clear vision that describes what the product will do and manages product roadmaps and features as part of prioritised product backlog
  • Roadmap: Management of product requirements (product backlog) in the context of the committed product roadmaps, timelines and available engineering resource
  • Business Unit / Customer: Identify, gather and organise core requirements for major projects working closely with Inmarsat’s sales, business development teams and development teams

Key Interfaces

The role will involve close interaction and collaboration with:

  • Other areas within the Commercial & Product Management team – including Product Strategy, Customer Insight, Programme Delivery, Market Intelligence & Offer Management – to ensure the products are appropriately focussed and aligned to the strategic and commercial frameworks, maximising opportunities for cross-company synergies wherever possible
  • Business Unit and Sales managers – providing input to and influencing the BUs regarding product roadmaps and taking input from them regarding their customer and partner knowledge
  • CTO managers – to provide input regarding desired customer journeys, portfolio and roadmap aims including ‘in life’ and ‘end of life’ management, and to take input regarding technology opportunities and actual usage
  • COO – to provide portfolio and roadmap aims including ‘in life’ and ‘end of life’ management, to work together to develop desired customer journeys, service and operational design and to gain understanding of actual experience
  • VAMs / OEMs – to gain insight into business development opportunities and to develop new products aligned to product and technology strategy
  • Marketing teams – to provide customer insight input on ‘how to win’ and to gather customer knowledge

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of the current and future competitive landscape
  • Experience of Satcom or Telecom industry
  • Must demonstrate strong commercial acumen
  • Pragmatic and results focused
  • ‘Agile’ and ‘waterfall’ change delivery knowledge and experience
  • Data driven - highly numerate and analytical
  • Excellent stakeholder management
  • A strong communicator with excellent influencing skills
  • Fluent in English language
