Job description

Rail Analysis is a multidisciplinary division, providing economic analysis, statistics and modelling to inform government priorities and decisions relating to the UK rail sector. We pride ourselves on being a supportive team, with a genuine focus on diversity and personal development.

Our division is made up of three teams, as Senior Transport Analyst you will join our Rail Modelling team. We work closely with other analytical and policy teams across the Department as well as industry and consumer groups to develop evidence bases to inform decisions in investment appraisal, environment and freight.

You will work with the Rail Modelling team using appraisal techniques as well as standard models to assess the costs and benefits of rail investment schemes. You will have the opportunity to work with us in our strategic objective to bring more rail modelling and appraisal in house. You will also run other allocation and forecasting models and be responsible for developing ways of bringing analysis in house.

You will need to learn about our models and develop expertise in rail modelling, therefore, this post offers significant benefits to help boost your career as an analyst and gain broader skills.
 

Responsibilities

Your key duties and responsibilities will include;

• Running a large array of rail forecasting and appraisal models.
• Carrying out appraisals of options to improve the railways.
• Providing guidance and model runs for Rail Analysts and Policy
• Presenting our analysis to analyst and non-analyst colleagues.

You will have the option to be based in either London attracting the London pay offer, or to work in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National pay offer with regular travel to our London office, funded by the Department.

About you

You will be able to demonstrate a significant level of analytical knowledge and experience to analyse and manipulate an array of datasets.

You will display excellent interpersonal skills, articulate and credible to build positive relationships within and outside of the Department, and resolve differences to gain consensus. You will confidently communicate complex data and ideas clearly and tactfully to technical and non-technical audiences in an engaging manner.

You will have a high attention to detail and enjoy taking the initiative to source data and provide solutions to analytical problems. You will be proficient with Excel spreadsheets and display confidence with producing graphs and illustrations in a clear and presentable manner.

You will have the ability to absorb information and develop rapidly, learning from experts within the team on different models and tools.

Interviews/assessments are likely to be held week commencing 11/01/2021.

This interview could be conducted via a video interview, details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.
