The Department for Transport’s (DfT) International Vehicle Standards (IVS) division is offering a unique opportunity to play a leading role in a high-profile area, developing regulations and shaping requirements for safe and innovative road vehicles both now and into the future.

Would you like to be at the forefront of developing technical requirements for automated road vehicles, representing the UK in international expert groups, and delivering research programmes?

Job description

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for two Senior Engineers to join us at Department for Transport! The Automated Vehicle Technologies team develop technical requirements to ensure that new vehicles with emerging technologies are safe and secure. Your work will be varied, covering areas such as vehicle automation, driver assistance systems, cybersecurity, data recorders as well as more established vehicle systems such as braking and steering.

The team sits within the International Standards division (IVS). You will be joining a team of experts in the fields of active and passive safety, automation, vehicle security (including cybersecurity), environmental impact, and vehicle approval. You will support teams and agencies from within the Department and across Government with technical expertise to develop UK objectives regarding emerging vehicle technologies. Representing the UK in international expert groups, you will work collaboratively with international partners in the development of international technical regulations for new vehicles. Taking an informed approach to your work means you will establish relationships across industry, research institutions, universities, foreign Governments and other organisations. You will commission and lead projects to support policy and ministerial decisions.

• Providing expertise within the IVS division, demonstrating flexibility across other projects and technical areas where required.
• Support teams across DfT, such as the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, with technical expertise in emerging vehicle technologies to assist in the development of objectives that uphold safety whilst enabling innovation and growth within the UK. Working also with the Vehicle Certification Agency to ensure consistent application and interpretation of regulations
