Could you inspire and support different teams to collaborate in order to deliver stretching projects?

We have an exciting opportunity available within our team here at DfTc that could be just right for you. We are looking to recruit an Analyst within a team that works flexibly and creatively across reporting lines on specific projects. Job description

The Strategy Unit sits at the heart of DfT, helping to shape its future policy agenda as we seek to build an increasingly decarbonised transport system that works for the people who depend on it, and which supports the levelling up of the economy. We bring together insights from inside and outside the Department to help answer some of the big strategic questions facing us at a time of critical change. We seek to improve the Department’s understanding of cross cutting issues and enable better decision making.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to join us in this challenging and rewarding Analyst role within the Strategy Unit. The Strategy Unit is part of the Strategy and Private Office Directorate and is the Department's Centre of Excellence for evidence-based and politically-informed strategic thinking. We are a team of analysts and policy officials who undertake wide-ranging analytical and cross-cutting work that helps the Department achieve its objectives.

For Hastings Location Only:
Our office will be moving from Ashdown House - our home in Hastings for a considerable number of years - and moving to a new, more modern and flexible office space at One Priory Square, in the town centre, on a 10-year lease.
This move will enable us to create a brilliant, more inclusive workspace for everyone – with much improved accessibility and much better public transport links. And, one that’s in line with the standards of the wider modernisation programme.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Leading specific analytical projects as tasked by the Department’s ExCo and StratCo Boards, on a range of high profile and interesting policy areas as part of the Department’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking.
• Leading work to develop the Department’s cross-cutting thinking on transport’s wider role in society, for example as part of the response to Covid-19 and leading the Department’s response to various commission from the centre.
• Influencing Ministers, ExCo and other senior managers on cross-cutting and strategic issues, including through insightful analysis, high quality briefing, and business case reviews for significant and contentious projects.
• Building and maintaining high quality relationships with analysts and policy leads across DfT, Whitehall and externally to share information and ensure we are influencing the right people at the right time.
• Playing a core role in shaping and delivering Strategy Unit’s analytical capability building offer to the rest of the Department; including providing leadership and guidance on the development of strategy across all areas of the department on, for example, business cases.
• Working with DfT colleagues to ensure the department has a strong strategic narrative for products and for wider external engagement.
• As part of the wider management team, helping to shape and manage the work of the unit to deliver the unit’s high-level objectives.

About you
You will join us with excellent analytical skills, a strong delivery record, experience of working with policy colleagues and other analytical teams spanning organisational boundaries. You will need to work creatively and effectively to lead strands of complex projects and project teams, managing their competing demands, whilst assessing and delivering priority outputs.

We want someone who has exceptional interpersonal skills. You will need to communicate complex information to others, having meaningful conversations to provide guidance and robust recommendations, where your engagement and relationship building skills will enable you to influence and challenge, often at very senior levels. We need someone with strong influencing skills and who is comfortable in pushing back and providing direction for your internal and external colleagues.

Integral to the role is being comfortable working with ambiguity in project-based teams where priorities can change rapidly as needs dictate. We require strong leadership skills: candidates will need to inspire and support disparate teams to deliver stretching projects under scrutiny from senior officials in the Department.
