Job description

The Department for Transport’s Rail Group is responsible for taking Britain’s railway into the future. We are committed to delivering a sustainable and customer-focused railway, putting passengers at the heart of the journey. We are working on a diverse range of high-profile projects, including procuring and managing franchise contracts worth billions of pounds.

We are looking for a dedicated Commercial Manager who is passionate about delivering the best transport solutions for passengers, freight operators and taxpayers and who understands that achieving this requires commitment and resourcefulness.

This high-profile role is pivotal to managing and bringing about improvements to a portfolio of long term commercial franchising contracts, ensuring contractual and performance obligations are met and exceeded. You will work collaboratively with the franchise companies on continuous improvement projects which may include developing and leading specification changes to deliver tangible improvements to future passenger experience.

As Commercial Manager, you will build and maintain long-term commercial relationships with Board level members of train companies. You will lead virtual, multidisciplinary teams, work with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including Passenger Representative Groups and provide briefings to senior management and Government Ministers.
 

Responsibilities

About You
You have experience of developing, negotiating and managing long term, high value contracts and the capability to handle variations appropriately.

You have the experience to handle risk effectively and use commercial levers to drive and manage performance. You are resilient, results driven and can deliver under pressure.

You are an articulate and persuasive communicator, with the ability to engage with individuals at all levels and build long-term relationships with industry partners, including managing relationships with multiple senior partners in complex environments.

You demonstrate excellent analytical skills and the ability to utilise management information to challenge the franchising operator on operational, project and financial performance.
