Job description

Part of the group HR function, this is an exciting opportunity to lead the group reward team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop in a high-profile role working within a highly supportive and inclusive team within the Department for Transport. Your key responsibilities will include:

Supporting the Head of Reward and Arm’s Length Bodies to develop and deliver a reward strategy for both SCS and delegated grades using creative and innovative methods which supports the business in achieving its objectives.


• To work closely with key stakeholders across the DfT organisations, to understand their business needs. This will require some travel to the various agency offices, gathering intelligence and insight, attending key meetings with the agency including Board meetings where appropriate. Developing strong and trusted relationships with HR Business Partners, using their business insight to inform the work, will be key.
• To lead on the implementation of the annual pay award including negotiating with departmental trade unions.
• To ensure that all reward initiatives are modelled and costed appropriately and that they fall within the required financial, HM Treasury and Cabinet Office budgetary/pay remit processes.
• To lead and build capability in the reward team, with line management responsibility of 2 SEO’s and 1 HEO.

We are looking to speak with individuals who have experience of working collaboratively and actively business partnering with departments to analyse trends and advising the leadership team on strategic business decisions relating to the pay and reward agenda of the organisation.

You’ll be confident applying your knowledge to set your own direction, influence decisions and thrive whilst managing a dynamic and challenging workload, welcoming a level of autonomy to your role.

You’ll have exceptional interpersonal skills and be able to communicate complex information to others, with the capability to provide guidance and information to inform decisions at all levels of the business.

For this role, it’s essential to be able to proactively manage your workload whilst retaining focus on the key priorities of the department.
