Job description

As Senior Coastal Operations Officer, you have the responsibility of the operational management, readiness and safety of volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers (CRO) within Coastguard Rescue Teams. As a calm and focused person, you are dedicated to managing the effective delivery of a brilliant emergency response service. This is a crucial service that is capable of responding to people either in distress or at risk of death on the coast.
 

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES 

As part of the role, your responsibilities may include: 

• acting as coach and mentor to CRO team leaders to ensure consistent standards of leadership and building a culture of safety 
• recruiting and inducting volunteers, including the monitoring of their probation and the provision of training in foundations skills 
• leading and delivering training, identifying training and development needs for individual and teams 
• providing an on scene response to incidents, providing leadership and direction of assets if required 
• assessing the capability of CRO teams responding to incidents, noting good practice and delivering lessons learned and training as appropriate 
• effectively handling assets and resources, including formal inspections of equipment. 
• ensuring equipment meets quality standards, legislation and health and safety requirements 
• representing the Agency and HM Coastguard at meetings with local authorities and other emergency services. 

You will be based in Bideford but there will be regular travel and work throughout North Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. 

We operate a 24/7 on-call roster and you will be required to participate in this, acting in a leadership, direction and standards role for the Coastguard Response Service. By exception, this will include deployment anywhere in the UK.

As you'll be working at an operational level which may be remote from your manager, we need someone who is comfortable to act on their own cognisance, sometimes for considerable periods of time. We would love someone who has superb communication and interpersonal skills and who is committed to working collaboratively to provide the best possible service. 

Your application will not be considered if you have been dismissed from the MCA in the past 24 months for failing to pass the required training for operational posts within HM Coastguard. 
You must be willing to operate throughout Coastguard Areas, which may entail overnight stays.

We provide a 24-hour maritime search and rescue service around the UK coast, and international search and rescue through HM Coastguard. Our Coastal Operations teams manage resources and service provision on the coast, supporting a team of 3,500 volunteer CROs operating in their local communities.

It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
